Overview
Obesity is currently a big problem in the world and in Indonesia. Obesity or being overweight and body fat is not just a cosmetic problem but has serious health impacts. If left untreated, obese patients will experience complications which can be shortened to 4M (metabolic, mechanical, mental, and monetary ). Metabolic problems include diabetes, cholesterol disorders, high blood pressure, fatty liver, fertility disorders and cancer. Mechanical problems include calcification of the joints, acid reflux disease, snoring, and urinary disorders. Mental problems such as mood disorders , anxiety, sleep disorders, and depression. Apart from that, the money problem is related to the impact of costs incurred either directly due to illness or indirectly due to lost opportunities at work.
Integrated Obesity Clinic (IOC) National Hospital Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo is a new service for obese patients by prioritizing multidisciplinary and patient centered concepts . In this service, patients are not only treated by one doctor but by a team consisting of internal medicine specialist doctors, endocrine, metabolic and diabetes consultants, clinical nutrition specialist doctors, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist doctors, mental health specialist doctors (psychiatrists), and if necessary action will be consulted with a specialist in digestive surgery (digestion) and an internal medicine doctor, consultant gastroenterologist. Every patient who goes to IOC will be assessed by each doctor and then discussed with the obesity team to determine the next treatment plan. Some patients may be sufficient with diet therapy and physical activity, but other patients may need help from medication or intervention such as installing a balloon in the stomach or bariatric surgery.
Currently, bariatric surgery and intragastric balloon installation have been performed on IOC patients with quite good results. It is hoped that with IOC, the management of obese patients can become more comprehensive, reduce complications and improve the patient's quality of life.
